Basic Music Theory: Quiz-Pack

Basic Music Theory Director's Packet Image Basic Music Theory: How to Read, Write and Understand Written Music has been incredibly successful with individual readers, but its short and easy chapters were designed for use with large or small ensembles in a school setting. This is a setting we all know can be frantic, and in which rehearsal time is always precious.

We know that a student's knowledge of music theory directly relates to his or her ability to perform intelligently and musically, but how can anyone possibly make the time for it? Twenty minutes a week is all you need with this system.

The Quizzes

top
Though multiple choice quizzes aren't the ideal way to test a student's knowledge, they are efficient as far as time is concerned. With class sizes that exist only in other teachers' nightmares, efficiency is important. The multiple choice format and correction keys will make correcting a quick and easy task for an aide.

Chapter quizzes are short enough to fit two of them on a page so you reduce your school's paper costs. Section Quizzes are longer and comprehensive. Each Chapter and Section has 4 different quizzes to curb cheating or to allow a student to take a quiz multiple times. These can be rotated in a 4-year period, month-to-month, or any way you think most effective.

Correction Keys

Each quiz has a correction key with a cut-out section to show students' answers. Simply place the appropriate key over the student's quiz and compare the correct answers with the student answers. It's such an easy process that an aide can perform it easily. These keys work wonderfully when laminated, a job your librarian can do for you.

Student Tracking Forms (link available soon!)

top
The Student Information form tracks class name, period/time, semester/year, student name, year, and condition of their book (new, good, used), and of course each student's progress through the Chapters in Basic Music Theory. There are spaces for nearly 100 students. The form is shaded so students (and you) can find their information quickly and easily. Each chapter has two columns to indicate date begun and date passed. Grades can be entered here also if you choose to use a grading system. Here is a sample chart. You'll need Adobe's Acrobat Viewer to read them. It's free.

Book Tracking and Student Funds Form (link for this soon, too)

A set of books is a significant investment of your program's resources, and just as a student is charged for damage to a borrowed instrument, so they are also responsible for damaged books. The form shows several values for books in conditions from new to damaged and is also shaded for convenient location of information. There are several more columns for other fees the student may owe, including a column for funds the student may have through fund raising.

Practice Cards and Practice Tracking Chart

A monthly practice card you can photocopy as needed, and a wall chart to enter the monthly information so you and your students can keep track of how much students play outside of class. The wall chart is shaded like the other charts so information is easy to find. Get the practice cards free! You'll need Adobe's Acrobat Viewer to read them. It's free, too.
